The Casuals who were extreme football fans were apparently a real sports subculture back in the 1980s.Īs fickle as it sounds, the costume design makes this film stand out from others, because most of the main characters wear Adidas and Kappa branded tracksuits. I’ve spoken to people who went to the UK in the 1980s and remember hooliganism been at its height. That being said, the editing wasn’t too good (i.e., the title card for example was crudely edited in) and the main protagonist comes across as unlikeable due to how he treats his parents. The soundtrack fits the setting and the way that the fight scenes are shot make you feel like you’re a passer-by witnessing real chaos transpire. Although one could argue both characters come across as caricatures of football hooligans, they made me believe in their characters. ![]() The performances of Paul Anderson and Daniel Mays stand out in particular. What sets this film apart from others with its subject matter is that it focuses on its characters and atmosphere besides fight scenes. It's a remake of the 1989 film of the same name directed by Alan Clarke which I unfortunately haven't seen yet.Īs stereotypical as the story can be of a young man joining a violent FC and being taken in by one of its leaders it's an interesting watch. To me the quintessential film should be this one. I saw "Green Street Hooligans" but didn't really find it good. A British film about football hooliganism (particularly between the notorious FCs for Millwall and Westham).Īpparently in the 2000s and 2010s there was a phase where football hooligan films in the UK were popular. ![]()
